When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

Tanzania is situated fairly close to the equator and the seasons can be divided loosely into rainy and dry seasons. Most visitors choose to come during the dry seasons, as there is very little chance of rain and the wildlife viewing is better.

Long rainy season: March, April, May.

Short rainy season:  end of October to middle of December

Whilst you may experience rain, the benefits of coming during rainy season are that the countryside is green, lush and spectacularly beautiful.  Crops are growing and the animals have good sources of food and water.  You will see plenty of wildlife during the rainy seasons, but less than in dry seasons.

The National Parks have the most visitors during July & August and middle of December to early January. If you want the chance to see the Migration crossing the Mara River in the Northern Serengeti, you should come in August/September.

Tanzania is spectacular.  Just the name conjures up golden savannah, safaris amongst African wildlife, breath-taking landscapes, geological features and lakes, the highest mountain in Africa and magical spice islands.

The Serengeti is a truly remarkable place. It is famous for its vast open grasslands which allow for excellent sightings of wildlife. It is best known for the annual migration.  Ngorongoro Crater looks like a forgotten world. It has both geological delights and is natural reserve which is home to some of the densest large mammal populations in the whole of Africa.

Tanzania is also home to Kilimanjaro – Africa’s largest mountain.  For many people, reaching the summit of this majestic mountain is a life-changing experience. Tanzania also has some of the most beautiful islands, with white sands and turquoise waters. There really is something for everyone.

How is the wildlife viewing in Tanzania?

Tanzania offers some of the best wildlife viewing on the entire planet. For many visitors, catching a glimpse of the Big Five is top of their wish list.  Buffalo, Elephant and Lion are easily seen. Leopards are harder to spot.  The Black Rhino is very rare throughout all of Tanzania, with the exception of Ngorongoro Crater. Even here, count yourself lucky if you see one!

Whilst the Serengeti boats abundant wildlife, it is perhaps best known for the annual Great Migration. Vast numbers of wildebeest; accompanied by large numbers of zebra and antelope move in an annual pattern, constantly seeking fresh grazing.  The plains of the Serengeti can be filled with these animals and it is breath-taking.  The wildebeest calving season is also a very special time to visit (January and February). Tanzania also boasts over 1,000 different species of birds, so remember to bring your binoculars!

How safe is Tanzania for tourists?

Tanzania is generally considered to be a safe place for tourists, especially as the majority of visitors will be looked after by their Tour Operator from the moment they land at the Airport. That said, you do need to take the usual precautions and keep up with government travel advisories.

All towns and cities have their share of petty crime and sensible precautions need to be taken. Wearing expensive looking jewellery/watches and carrying cameras, will draw unnecessary attention. At night in towns it’s best to use a taxi, rather than walking around the streets.  Tanzania is quite a conservative culture, so please avoid wearing ‘short shorts’ and low-cut tops.  These can attract unwanted attention and can cause offence.

What type of accommodation can I expect on a safari in Tanzania?

The places that you stay during your Tanzania Safari can be a source of unforgettable memories.  Accommodation falls into three broad categories:

Hotels and Lodges: These are full-service facilities with private rooms or cottages and private bathrooms.  They will typically have designated restaurants and lounges and some have swimming pools.  Many lodges are architecturally stunning made with local materials and inspired by local designs and the environment.

Tented Camps: Tented Camps are permanent or semi-permanent camps sited in areas of excellent game viewing.  These provide many of the comforts of a lodge within private spacious canvas tents on a solid permanent base with beds, private bathrooms and good quality food. Tented camps are more intimate than lodges and offer a more adventurous safari experience

Camping in tents on the ground:Guests sleep in private tents (designed to sleep 3 people) in designated public campsites in or near National Parks.
